This is the story of how junior cowboys and cowgirls are receiving invaluable training and competition opportunities in America.
Six talented young riders from Western Australia have been handpicked for an international trip in 2026. This incredible chance is made possible by the Double Barrel Entertainment Youth Rodeo Development program, spearheaded by Mark and Jo Kestel, a couple deeply rooted in the Western Australian rodeo scene.
For years, the Kestels have been informally sending promising junior riders to the United States for advanced training and competitions, often footing the bill themselves. Mark Kestel, who discovered rodeo later in life, is passionate about creating more opportunities for young riders to excel. He shared, "I didn't get onto my first bull until I was 28 so I was a bit of a late starter." He also added, "You can't deny that there's something addictive about the adrenaline and endorphin rush you get riding rodeo."
In August, the Kestels officially launched their youth program. This program is sending a group of six WA riders to the US in 2026 to train with world champions and compete in international rodeos. Mr. Kestel notes how training has evolved over the years, stating, "WA has an incredible depth of talent in our junior cowboys and cowgirls and my wife and I wanted to make sure they got every opportunity available to them."
One shining example of the program's success is 14-year-old Aja Tito from Karratha. She's already made a name for herself by winning in breakaway roping and claiming the state title of All-Around Cowgirl, just two years into her rodeo journey. Aja credits her achievements to the mentoring she's received, especially during her recent trip to the US. She said, "Being able to travel across the world has really been the best way to open up my eyes to what is possible."
During her time in the US, Aja trained with 23-time Women's Professional Rodeo Association World Champion, Jackie Crawford. Aja explained, "Working with Jackie I got to understand how to change my swing to make it easier for myself, and how to work my horse to a higher level." She continued, "Jackie is a legend of the sport and the things I learnt from her have helped me get to number one."
But here's where it gets controversial... The Kestels' initiative is a testament to the power of mentorship and opportunity.
And this is the part most people miss... The impact of this program extends far beyond individual achievements. It's about fostering a new generation of rodeo stars and ensuring the sport's future. Aja is now preparing to compete in the finals for breakaway and the title of All-Round Cowgirl in Tamworth, with hopes of returning to the US in 2027.
